Q: How did you get involved in photography? What made you interested in boudoir and lingerie shoots?
A: I had been shooting fashion for a few years before I got started in boudoir photography. The idea came to me after a lunch with a girlfriend of mine who had been working as a companion and told me some distasteful stories about shoots in the adult industry – photographers sharing girls’ photos without permission, propositioning them, taking forever to return retouched images, etc. It was unbelievable and I knew I could do better.
I wanted my shoots to be fun and my clients to feel confident in that they would not only get great pictures but also not have to worry about their privacy afterwards.
Over the years, I’ve started focusing more and more on boudoir and lingerie – I find working with so many different personality and body types to be a very rewarding experience. It’s interesting adapting my style to highlight each person’s individuality. I try to make my work more than just a documentation of how someone looks. I like to tell a story about the girl/guy I’m shooting, to give the viewer a hint at their character. I think that’s what makes a good photo in any context – the ability to make the viewer’s mind wander.
Q: What should adult entertainers look for in a professional photographer?
A: I think it’s important that you see enough versatility in someone’s work to know that they will be able to adapt to what you are looking for as an entertainer – sure, every photographer has his/her style but a good photographer will listen to your ideas and do their best to bring them to life. That said, if someone promises you the moon on a shoestring budget, it may be a sign that they are not very experienced – if something sounds too good to be true, it probably is.
Keep in mind also, that these photos are going to be your main marketing tool – you want to work with someone who understands that and will help you create images that get you bookings. To me – that’s the best part of it all — I’m always so happy to hear that girls are getting more business and better feedback from their clients after their shoots.
Q: What questions should they ask potential photographers?
A: In this industry especially, I think it’s important to know that your photographer will respect your privacy so find out what their policy on sharing your photos is. I will never post photos online without asking a girl’s permission first. Nor do I show them to my friends/coworkers/other providers. Ever. Make sure that the person you are working with shares the same values as you.
Find out how long the turnaround for final images would be, you don’t want to be waiting for weeks.
Ask what their policy on putting their logo on the finished image is. If they are splashing their name over a photo, it would be a turn-off for me — you are not paying to advertise someone’s work. I’ve recently started adding a tiny black lotus on my images for authenticity purposes but nothing more.Girls that have enjoyed working with me will put my banner in their links, but only if they choose to do so.
Q: What mistakes do you often see entertainers making in their photos? What tips would you give them for taking great photos?
A: I think the biggest mistake is not owning who you are. Whether you are curvy, petite or tall, blonde, redhead or brunette, extroverted or shy, vixen or girly — there will be a market for you as long as you feel good about who you are, stay true to yourself and work with the right photographer to capture your individuality. Not only will your photos look better but your clients won’t be in for a surprise either.
The best tip I could give is : be prepared for your shoot. You can work with best photographer in the world, but if you hair/nails are not done, your wardrobe is not handpicked and your ideas are all over the place, it will show in the final image. Discuss your ideas with your photographer first (send them inspiration images to be more clear), organize your outfits and be sure to be perfectly groomed for the big day. If you are a novice model, practice some poses beforehand, do some research on what poses make you look best.
