Google +1 Button

I’m sure you’ve heard about the google+ social network that is trying to knock facebook off its perch. One cool feature they’ve created is the +1 button:

This is similar to the facebook ‘like’ button. You add it to your site and when your visitor is logged into a google account they can click it to mark it as ‘cool’. Then when it comes time for someone in their circle to search for something related to your site, google will take into account how many times your site has been marked ‘cool’ and rank it accordingly.

How can you, the webmaster, take advantage of this? Add the +1 button to your site and get as many people as possible to +1 it. This should help your search engine rankings, although we don’t know yet how profoundly it will affect them.

Here’s how you can add it to your site:

1. Copy this code below and paste it into the ‘google webmaster tools’ section of your analytics page (if you’ve already got code their from google webmaster tools, just paste this code below it)

<script type=”text/javascript” src=”https://apis.google.com/js/plusone.js”>
</script>

2. Copy the following code and paste it into the source of any page on your site where you want the button to show up:

<g:plusone></g:plusone>

+1-code

Save that and you’ve got a +1 button on your site!
